Retroactively, we can assume they were as powerful as they were because they were similar to the heroes that arose during the events of D3 - only with more limitations on them because of the Worldstone. The heroes of Diablo and Diablo 2 were all exceptional beings, with the canonical stories being that all of the available classes worked together as a party in their respective games (three in Diablo, seven in Diablo 2). With D3, it was revealed that it was essentially holding humanity back. Baal corrupts the Worldstone at the end of D2, and Tyrael subsequently destroys it at the time, the impact of this was left ambiguous - we didn't know much about what it actually did at the time. The original nephaldn were exceedingly powerful, which is why Inarius utilized the Worldstone to weaken them with each generation until they became relatively mundane.
